About quilling

Picture

Paper quilling is also known as paper filigree, and appears to have originated in religious houses around the fifteenth century.  Examples of the craft still in existence date from the early 18th century.  Despite its popularity waning at times, the art of quilling has always returned to favour with new generations.

Lucy, in Sense and Sensibility, was said to be quilling a filigree basket, and the Bronte sisters were also quillers.

The term quilling takes its name from the use of feather 'quills' around which the paper could be wound.
